Dallas Wings turn to a long time college coach to fix what’s been broken
The Dallas Wings are turning the page, and turning to a proven winner.
After weeks of searching for stability, Dallas is expected to hire longtime South Florida coach Jose Fernandez as its next head coach.
Fernandez spent 25 years transforming USF into a mid-major powerhouse, guiding the Bulls to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and earning a reputation for developing international stars and building consistent winners.
Now, he’s headed to the WNBA to take over a franchise desperate for direction, and fresh energy.
485 career wins and won 2 gold medals with USA Basketball’s U18 (2024) and U19 (2025) teams in the FIBA Americup as an assistant coach.

This move marks the Wings’ fifth head coach in seven seasons, but it’s their boldest gamble yet. Fernandez’s résumé screams experience and longevity, two traits the Wings have sorely lacked amid years of coaching turnover.
The timing couldn’t be more critical: Dallas has one of the league’s most intriguing young cores, headlined by 2025 No. 1 pick and ROTY Paige Bueckers, and a front office eager to build a true contender in the Western Conference.
Fernandez’s ability to connect with players, recruit globally, and demand accountability could be exactly what this roster needs to grow from potential to powerhouse.
Of course, the biggest question remains, how will a college lifer handle the WNBA grind? Fernandez has never coached at the professional level, but his track record of adapting, innovating, and winning at USF suggests he’s ready for the leap.
For a franchise that’s seen too many short-lived eras, Dallas is betting that Fernandez’s experience and player-first approach can finally bring the long-term stability and culture the Wings have been searching for.

The skid continues in Dallas. The Stars snapped their scoreless streak but not their losing one, falling 3-2 in overtime to the Los Angeles Kings despite power-play goals from Jason Robertson and Wyatt Johnston.
Former Stars Corey Perry and Cody Ceci struck back for L.A., and Adrian Kempe sealed it in OT.

Sometimes a team’s turning point doesn’t come from a blockbuster trade or a new manager, it comes from one statement series.
The Toronto Blue Jays’ World Series run may have quietly begun with a three-game sweep of the Texas Rangers back in late May.
That stretch flipped their season on its head, showing how one week in a 162-game grind can change everything.
