👋 Hello, friends!

And happy Cooper Flagg Day to all who celebrate.

I’m a pretty positive person, I’d say, which makes the next sentence a little a little contradictory. One of my favorite quotes is from Ted Lasso. “It’s the hope that kills you.” Well, it’s better to die trying than to not try at all, and after today, the Mavs officially will have some hope.

Also, I announced yesterday that my time at DLLS is coming to an end. Thursday will be my last show and my last newsletter. I’ll have more info on that further down.

Never a doubt

OK, maybe I’m not as positive of a person as I believe. Or maybe my anxiety is getting worse. Because even though the expectation of Kyrie Irving staying in a Mavs uniform wasn’t really in doubt, there was one voice in the back of my head — and I’m sure it was the same for many people who follow the Mavs — asking this question: what if Nico Harrison shocks the NBA world again?

What if Kyrie Irving, after an injury, didn’t get an offer that he’d be willing to take to settle down in Texas?

I should’ve known better. At least because this video of Kyrie singing “Drink a beer” by Luke Bryan surfaced.

Like many of us, Kyrie Irving wasn’t born in Texas — found out today he was actually born in Australia, which I think I knew, but apparently forgot? — but he got here as fast as he could. And now he’s settling down roots.

Kyrie, according to our Marc Stein, declined a $43 million option to instead sign a three-year, $119 million deal with the Mavs.

The deal sets the stage for something that’s been obvious since the Luka trade: this is Kyrie’s team for the immediate future. Eventually, barring a surprise trade, it’ll be Cooper Flagg’s, but for now, it belongs to Kyrie.

It got me thinking, too: if Kyrie finishes out his extension in Dallas it’ll make it the second longest tenure of his career, only behind his original team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. That’s pretty neat.
