Jason Kidd shakes up the lineup, but Dallas still can’t close

The Dallas Mavericks somehow found a way to lose one of their most frustrating games of the season, a 101-99 home collapse to a Pelicans team missing Zion Williamson.

Cooper Flagg, in his first start at forward, had a solid outing and a chance to tie it late, but his final shot rimmed out as the Mavs dropped another winnable game thanks to a sluggish start and turnover-filled fourth quarter. It’s another night of self-inflicted wounds and wasted opportunities for a team still searching for consistency.

Jason Kidd tried to shake things up by making a major lineup change, benching Klay Thompson for D’Angelo Russell. The move didn’t spark much improvement.

Russell finished 3-of-10 from the field with three assists as Dallas’ offense once again stalled, particularly in key moments down the stretch.

Ironically, it was Thompson who looked most revived. Coming off the bench for the first time this season, he scored 11 points in 21 minutes, providing the steady shot-making that has eluded him early on.

But his play wasn’t enough to mask another offensive meltdown for the Mavs, who continue to dig themselves deeper with every close loss.

The Dallas Cowboys went shopping before the trade deadline, and came home with two major defensive pieces.

Dallas landed All-Pro DT Quinnen Williams from the Jets and tackling machine Logan Wilson from the Bengals in back-to-back moves that could help their struggling defense.

But with a 3-5-1 record, it may be too little, too late for a playoff push?

Wyatt Johnston just keeps delivering when it matters most.

The 22-year-old Dallas Stars phenom has already scored two Game 7 clinchers, buried a shootout winner against the Oilers this week, and is tied for the team lead in goals.

Whether it’s late-game heroics or big-stage poise, Johnston’s mix of hockey IQ, competitiveness, and Pavelski-style work ethic is turning him into one of the NHL’s most clutch young stars.

The Texas Rangers have yet to make a move this offseason despite glaring needs in the rotation, bullpen, and lineup.

With the Winter Meetings looming, the question is simple: will Chris Young strike big again or play the waiting game?
