The good news for the Dallas Stars: the feat they’re trying to accomplish has been done before – 32 times, in fact. While coming back from a 3-1 series isn’t impossible, it is extremely difficult, especially when it feels like the bounces aren’t going a team’s way.
Our Sam Nestler, reporting from Edmonton, wrote about that. Here are two excerpts from his game recap column.
Dallas outshot Edmonton 34-24 in Game 3, 21-7 in the second period alone. They hit a few posts, one shot hit off the butt end of Stuart Skinner’s stick, and the bounces simply haven’t gone their way. Just look at the trusty ol’ “Deserve to Win O’ Meter” and scoring chances chart from MoneyPuck…
…Sometimes luck plays a huge role. So does bearing down and putting the puck in the net when you get a chance. But the Stars also need to do more to create their own luck.
Or else, another Stars season could end on the precipice of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Not to get all doom and gloom yet, but I think the potential of another Western Conference Final exit brings up some interesting questions about where the Stars go from here. Jim Nill is a finalist for General Manager of the Year after winning the previous two seasons. Head coach Pete DeBoer has made the western conference final in each of his first three seasons in Dallas.
And yet, the Stars are staring down the potential of failing to get over the hump once again. What gives?
We can dive into that question more later if necessary.
Go deeper: Sam has his three takeaways from Game 4.

Nathan Eovaldi exited very early on Tuesday. Bad injury news afoot? The Rangers don’t think so moving forward.
This graphic is going to get used as a meme in the fantasy football playoffs next year isn’t it.
Kyle Pitts was not present at Falcons OTAs today, per @TerrinWaack.
